Is your program university-based or university-affiliated, community-based, or a military or community hospital?
Our Trauma Fellowship program is part of a premier public teaching medical center recognized as a regional resource for advanced specialized health care. We are a community-based fellowship program with a major affiliation with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. About 100 MSU CHM medical students complete required clerkships at Hurley. In addition, Hurley sponsors six additional residency and fellowship programs. As a fellow, you have the opportunity to obtain an appointment as an instructor from MSU CHM.

Do you require U.S. clinical experience to be considered for a position in your residency program?
We do not require U.S. experience. However, if an applicant has had significant experience in a U.S. practice or hospital, that can be an asset.

Are the Trauma Fellowships accredited?
The Trauma Surgery Fellowship is recognized by the American Board of Surgery, and the program has approval from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

What are the selection criteria?
We look at the entire application when evaluating candidates. For the Trauma Surgery Fellowship, candidates must have completed a surgical residency program. For the Trauma Research Fellowship, candidates must have completed a residency program in any discipline. Candidates must pass either:
- USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2 - Clinical Knowledge (Step 2 - Clinical Skills is not required)
OR
- COMLEX Level 1 and COMLEX Level 2.

We look at the entire application when evaluating candidates. For the Trauma Surgery Fellowship, candidates must have completed a surgical residency program, and they must pass the USMLE Steps 1 & 2 Clinical Knowledge or COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2. Step 2 Clinical Skills is not required. For the Trauma Research Fellowship, candidates must have completed a residency program in any discipline or have completed medical school.

Both the Trauma Surgery Fellowship and the Trauma Research Fellowship follow the same academic schedule, beginning on July 1 each year and ending on June 31 the following year, for a full one-year program.

International medical graduates are welcome to submit an application to our program; however, candidates must have an ECFMG certificate and a valid J1 Visa.

When do you interview applicants for the Trauma fellowships?
Candidates will be contacted for a potential interview between December and March for fellowships starting in July. For example, Candidates who would like to start July 1, 2017, would be contacted between December 2016 and March 2017 for the position that begins July 1, 2017.

What credentials are required for the Trauma fellowships?
Trauma Surgery Fellowship
Candidates need either an educational limited medical license or a permanent medical license to practice clinically in Michigan. In addition, they must be certified in the following:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
Trauma Research Fellowship
Candidates for the Trauma Research Fellowship are not required to have a medical license or certifications.
