On this page, you will find answers to many of the most commonly asked questions about the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Hurley Medical Center. More general questions are also answered on the FAQ page for Hurley Graduate Medical Education.

• Is your Internal Medicine Residency Training Program university-based or university-affiliated, community-based, or a military or community hospital?

  Our Internal Medicine Residency program is part of premier public teaching medical center recognized as a regional resource for advanced specialized health care. We are a community-based residency program with a major affiliation with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. About 100 MSU CHM medical students complete required clerkships at Hurley. As an Internal Medicine resident, you have the opportunity to obtain an appointment as an instructor resident from MSU CHM.

• Does Research and Observership come under the criteria of U.S. clinical experience?

  Research and serving as an observer would not fall under the criteria of U.S. clinical experience.

• Do you require U.S. clinical experience to be considered for a position in your residency program?

  We do not require U.S. experience. However, if an applicant has had significant experience in a U.S. practice or hospital, that can be an asset.

• Is ECFMG certification required at the time of application?

  Yes, ECFMG certification is required when submitting an application.

• Do you accept International Medical Graduates?

  International medical graduates are welcomed and encouraged to submit an application to our program.

• Does Research and Observership come under the criteria of U.S. clinical experience?

  Research and serving as an observer would not fall under the criteria of U.S. clinical experience.

• Do the residency training programs accept Visas?

  Hurley accepts J-1 Visas.

• Do you allow applicants to observe in your hospital before the interview?

  No. We do not accept observers before the interview.

• What are the minimum USMLE and COMLEX scores that you require for Internal Medicine Programs?

  USMLE: A score of 220 is the minimum three-digit score used for Steps 1 and 2-Clinical Knowledge in our Internal Medicine Residency Training program. In all cases, candidates must have passed Steps 1 and 2-Clinical Knowledge on the first two attempts. Candidates are required to pass the Clinical Skills section on Step 2 on at least the first two attempts.

  COMLEX: Internal Medicine requires a minimum three-digit score of 500 for both Level 1 and Level 2 COMLEX, and candidates must have passed each section (Level 1 and Level 2) in at least the first two attempts.

• Is ECFMG certification required at the time of application?

  Yes, ECFMG certification is required when submitting an application.

• Does the residency program have a graduation cut-off date?

  Candidates must start a residency training program within five years after obtaining their medical degree. However, at the Program Director’s discretion, exceptions may be made for candidates who provide evidence of outstanding educational achievements or have been treating patients in an active clinical practice and/or hospital setting.

• Do you accept International Medical Graduates?

  International medical graduates are welcomed and encouraged to submit an application to our program.

• Do the residency training programs accept Visas?

  Hurley accepts J-1 Visas.

• How many positions do you have in Internal Medicine?

  A total of 15 first-year positions are available each year.

• How often are Internal Medicine residents on call?

  Residents are typically on call every 4th day.

• Are candidates required to participate in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)?

  Yes, all candidates must submit their applications through ERAS. Osteopathic physicians may apply through ERAS, as can international medical graduates. For additional information on applying to one of the Hurley residency programs, click here.
