To apply to one of our residency training programs

Please use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®), a program of the Association of American Medical Colleges. It may be used by U.S. medical school graduates, international medical school graduates, and fellowship applicants. A Letter of Recommendation (LoR) Portal may be used by LoR authors.

In ERAS, submit:

Accommodations

Hurley is pleased to offer options for accommodations to residency candidates during their interviews. Arrangements can be coordinated with administrative staff in each residency training program.

Eligibility requirements

Each residency program sets its own interview timeframe and schedule, but interviews - which are mandatory in order to be considered for a position - generally take place in the last three months of the year prior to the start date. (So applicants for the 2021-2022 academic year would interview in fall 2020, in general.) Likewise, each program sets its own minimum recommended USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 score for applicants, which may be found in our FAQ section below.

Other specifications:

• Candidates must start the residency program within 5 years after completion of their medical degree.
• Candidates must meet all eligibility and selectcon criteria of resident guidelines established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
• We consider international medical graduates who meet the other eligibility criteria (just as we consider other candidates), and we also accept J1 Visas.

  • Is Hurley Medical Center affiliated with a medical school?

    Hurley has major affiliations with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and the University of Michigan Health System, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels of training. Hurley Medical Center is part of the Flint Campus of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. About 100 third- and fourth-year medical students are assigned to the Flint Campus annually. Our internal medicine, pediatric, combined internal medicine/pediatric, obstetrics and gynecology, and transitional year residency training programs, as well as the geriatric medicine and trauma fellowships, are affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. The emergency medicine residency, emergency medicine pediatric fellowship and pediatric dentistry residency are affiliated with the University of Michigan.

  • What's new at Hurley?
    • De-escalation training: All Hurley staff - including resident physicians, fellows, faculty and staff - recently completed de-escalation training, designed to help defuse intense situations, preventing high-stress situations.
    • Wellness expert assesses Hurley: A collaborative initiative between Graduate Medical Education and the Hurley Medical Center Medical Staff office approved the use of a national wellness consultant in fall 2018 to assess the culture within the academic and clinical learning environment at Hurley. This is part of the institution’s emphasis on wellness - which already includes 24/7 access to on-site fitness areas, relaxation rooms, health classes and health program incentives.
    • New interim Pediatric Residency program director: Gwen Reyes MD was named interim program director as of July 1, 2018. She is a graduate of Hurley’s Pediatric Residency Program herself. Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha MD MPH, previous program director, remains as faculty and serves as a mentor during the transition process.
    • A new director for the Hurley Children’s Clinic: Sandra Bronni MD was named director of the Hurley Children’s Clinic at the Flint Farmers’ Market. She started Aug. 1, 2018.
    • New pediatric clinic faculty: Gretchen Bakos MD was recruited to provide supervision and training of residents in the Children’s Clinic. She began in October 2018.
    • New associate program director in Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics: Adiraj Singh MD, a Med/Peds faculty member and Hurley graduate, was named associate program director, beginning with the July 2018 academic year.
    • Two new maternal-fetal-medicine specialists: Two new faculty joined the Hurley Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Training Program as MFM specialists: Robert Welch MD and Michael Bork DO.
    • New infectious disease faculty in Internal Medicine: Philip McDonald MD joined the Hurley Internal Medicine Residency as an infectious disease faculty member.
    • New hospitalist joins Internal Medicine faculty: Ashok Kanugula MD is now an academic hospitalist in Hurley’s Internal Medicine Residency Program.
    • SimMan(R) in Internal Medicine: The Hurley Medical Center/Michigan State University Internal Medicine Residency Program purchased a programmable mannequin (SimMan(R)) for simulation training of residents.
    • More research assistance in Internal Medicine: A doctoral level researcher was hired in the Internal Medicine Residency Program to assist residents and faculty with research functions.
    • Mobile WOW machines: New workstations on wheels are assigned to each of the main rounding resident teams to make rounding faster and more efficient, with the ability to include patients and families.
    • Google suite now used hospitalwide: To improve collaboration, the Google suite of products is now used institutionwide at Hurley.
    • Library moves down 1 floor to make room for education center: The Hurley Medical Library recently completed its move down one floor, freeing up space for renovations to create a new education center on the first floor. Spring 2019 construction is planned.
    • Resident clinic moves to main campus: The continuity clinic of Hurley’s Combined Internal Medicine / Pediatrics Residency Training Program moved from an off-site location to the Medical Office Building on Hurley’s Main Campus, just in time for the start of the 2017-2018 academic year. The new space provides a conference/precepting room, ample exam rooms and waiting area, and integration of clinic medical records with the hospital’s electronic medical record system. It also means Med/Peds residents don’t have to drive off site for clinic duty - they can just walk from the main hospital.
    • Medical Dictation for Mobile Digital Devices: Hurley now uses the M*MOdal dictation/ transcription platform, with a mobile app that allows users to quickly and accurately record clinical notes during patient encounters for easy integration with electronic health record systems. It increases productivity and improves quality. The secure platform ensures that patient information remains private. These devices are available at multiple computer work stations for residents.
    • Mobile Device-Charging Kiosk: The Hurley Medical Library can now help charge up to 8 devices that use charging connectors Apple Lightning, Apple 30-Pin, Micro USB, or USB Type-C. The fast charging technology reduces charge time and eliminates overcharging. The Medical Library is located in the basement of the North Building, across from Medical Records. (Staff hours: Monday-Friday, 8a-4:30p)
    • Food Pharmacy for Adults: A first in the region, Hurley’s Food Pharmacy address food insecurity and nutritional needs of Hurley patients, particularly those who will be discharged from the hospital or who need access to nutritious, well balanced meals while they heal. Perhaps more importantly, they are given access to community resources to keep healthy foods coming. One unique feature? Hurley’s electronic medical record system prompts the health team to check for food insecurity, which then leads to an immediate gift of a few days of healthy food for the entire family - and a prescription to return to the Food Pharmacy later. New for 2018-2019 are meal samples and meal kits. Visitors to the Food Pharmacy can taste a prepared, healthy meal, then take home all of the ingredients and a recipe to make it at home for their families.
    • New visual content from Hurley library subscription: DynaMed is now DynaMed Plus, which features improved visual content, images, algorithms, and other visual content from the popular point-of-care database of medical topics. At Hurley, it also is integrated into our electronic medical record system, where clinicians can quickly see the levels of evidence and guidelines behind recommendations, with PubMed links to view original articles. Mobile access also is available with the DynaMedPlus app.
    • Hurley Children’s Hospital/Miracle Network wins national contest: Hurley’s Children’s Hospital is the only Children’s Miracle Network hospital in the region and one of only four in the state. We recently won a national Children’s Miracle Network Hospital contest from Credit Unions for Kids, which awarded us $50,000, garnering an extra “matched” donation of $10,000 from the Sheppy Dog Fund, which was started by Hurley pediatric dentist Alan Klein DDS.
    • Totally smoke-free campus: Hurley is completely a smoke-free campus, and a new, covered shelter just outside the edge of Hurley’s campus now provides a safe place for smokers. The shelter provides cover from the elements but is open enough that continuous safety video surveillance can occur. Most importantly, the second-hand smoke will not impede the well-being of patients, visitors and staff on campus.
    • Hurley Children’s Center nears four whole years at Farmer’s Market: Families who visit Hurley Pediatric Residency’s outpatient clinic – and Hurley’s 12 subspecialty pediatric clinics – have found easier access, since the new location is right across from Flint’s bus station. Located in 10,300 square feet on the top floor of the new Flint Farmer’s Market, the office also is handy for medical students from the Flint Campus of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, which is just across the parking lot. The $2 million project (partially funded by the Mott Foundation) concluded in summer 2015. Residents have their own conference room, work stations, and observation rooms for faculty to observe clinical exams; and patients and families have a waiting room that makes it easy to do homework, with tables and comfy chairs. One bonus: Residents can write a prescription for healthy vegetables and then walk their patients downstairs to the Farmer’s Market, which participates in the state’s Double Up Food Bucks program that matches purchases one-to-one when made by recipients of the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
    • Pediatric Prescriptions for fresh fruits and vegetables: Patients and families at the Hurley Children’s Clinic can continue to get a prescription from their clinic doctor for fresh fruit and vegetables from the Farmer’s Market on the lower level. When the Market is closed, bags of fresh fruits and vegetables are waiting for patients to pick up on their way out the door.
• Eligibility and Selection Criteria
  • What are your selection criteria?

    In addition to strong scores on the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Learning Examination of the United States (COMLEX), we also require residency applicants to have graduated from medical school no more than five years before entering the residency program, unless the applicant has significant clinical experience in the interim.

    We look at the entire application when evaluating candidates; however, candidates must pass the USMLE Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge, and Step 2 Clinical Skills within the first two attempts.

    * Candidates who take COMLEX Level 1 and COMLEX Level 2 must have a passing score that is at or above the national mean for their exam year. They also must pass each secion of the COMLEX (Level 1 and Level 2) on at least the first two attempts.

  • Do you require U.S. clinical experience to be considered for a position in your residency program?

    We do not require U.S. experience. However, if an applicant has had significant experience in a U.S. practice or hospital, that can be an asset.

  • Do you offer pre-match positions?

    No pre-match positions are offered in our residency training programs.

  • Do you accept osteopathic physicians in your residency programs?

    Yes, we welcome osteopathic physicians to apply for our residency positions. To do so, visit the allopathic Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) online at: www.aamc.org/services/eras/, and submit your application, personal statement, dean’s letter, etc. Your COMLEX scores are an acceptable alternative to the USMLE scores.

    For all training programs at Hurley, applicants must pass COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2 in the first two attempts. In addition, each of the the scores must be >/= the average COMLEX score for the applicant’s exam year.

  • What about USMLE Step 3?

    USMLE Step 3 is not required for interview purposes.

  • I am a medical student with loans. Is there anything that Hurley can do to help?

    Yes. Hurley Medical Center meets the criteria for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. This new program offers forgiveness for remaining debt after a physician has completed ten years of eligible employment and qualifying loan payments. (During those 10 years, an Income-Based Repayment (IBR) plan can help keep your loan payments affordable.) For more information on the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program visit www.ibrinfo.org.

  • How do I apply to a Hurley Residency Training Program?

    Applications to all of our residency training programs must be sent through the Electronic Residency Application Service ( ERAS). ERAS is the service that transmits residency applications, letters of recommendations, transcripts and other supporting documents for candidates. The ERAS website is www.aamc.org/eras. Each residency training program utilizes the National Resident Matching Program to rank candidates who meet criteria for appointment to specific residency training programs at Hurley.   • How will I know if I have been selected for an interview?

    You will receive an e-mail from the program who interviewed you, with an invitation to select an interview date. Some programs may use interview-scheduling software. Please follow the email instructions carefully. We attempt to be as flexible as possible with interview dates, so in most cases you will have several options for interview days. Once you select a date, inform the program coordinator as described in your email invitation. You will receive email confirmation, as well as further instructions.

  • Should I email the program director or coordinator with my application information or to ask about the likelihood of getting an interview?

    No, all applications are reviewed only on ERAS. No advice or recommendation is given over email or telephone. The program does have eligibility criteria; however, all applications are reviewed in their entirety only on ERAS.

  • Does Research and Observership come under the criteria of U.S. clinical experience?

    Research and serving as an observer do not meet the criteria of U.S. clinical experience.

  • Are candidates required to participate in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)?

    Yes, all candidates must submit their applications through ERAS. This includes Osteopathic physicians and international medical graduates. The ERAS website is www.aamc.org/eras.

  • How can I find the status of my application to a Hurley residency program?

    Hurley receives >10,000 applications to its residency programs. It is impossible to notify every applicant of his or her application status. However, applicants who are selected for an interview will receive an interview invitation.

  • Can a resident receive a faculty appointment?

    Yes. The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine offers instructor resident appointments.

  • What is the work environment like at Hurley?
